We’re delighted to announce that Andrew Gratton, Portfolio Manager for Viridian Portfolio Management, has been recognised as one of the Top 100 Financial Advisers in Australia. Ranked 44 in the list, Andrew has been an integral part of Viridian’s growth over the past four years. He took a chance on Viridian, moving from England in 2016 to join us after cutting his teeth in financial institutions like JP Morgan and RBS.

We asked him to share how he has worked with his clients in the current environment. Here’s what he had to say:

There are three things that I think make a difference to clients.

1. Communication and education

It’s important to be on the front foot when dealing with clients. The past few months have been difficult, but when we were going through that volatility period I stayed close to my clients. It’s important to be there when they need you most and not going missing. Sometimes it’s a general chat about how they’re feeling about things and sometimes it’s something more specific that they want to address. The discussion needs to be had whether it’s something small or large, you should have it immediately rather than let it fester in the background.

Part of communication is client education, which comes from having highly skilled advisors who know what they’re doing and impart that knowledge. This involves taking clients up the education curve as we move through their journey and financial strategies.

2. Specialist advisors

Knowing when to bring a specialist into the conversation is also crucial. We’ve got a number of great people throughout Viridian who are specialists in their area. So when I need someone who knows about aged care I bring in Martin Sherwood, and for disability care I bring in Kathy Havers. These people are able to provide clients with that point of service or strategy that they need.

3. Technology and Innovation

The ability to piggyback off strong technology solutions and transfer those to my clients is crucial. This ensures they’re more engaged with things like online reporting and regular communications around what’s going on with their portfolios. At Viridian, we’ve always strived to achieve high levels of innovation and our focus is on delivering this to our clients.

These are the three areas that are key when delivering high quality service to clients.
